About the fair
Shawnee Parks & Recreation is proud to present Remake Learning Night + Business Fair.

Remake Learning Night What is it? Think of a giant science fair or art show that’s singular goal is to do it just to work those “making muscles.”

Come “Remake” with us… dancing, drawing, crafting, building, experimenting… we’ll have several stations to have fun at!

There will also be youth booths and vendors on site to buy from and check out kids creations!

Finally, our community-based partners like Mad Science of Greater Kansas City, Challenge Island of Johnson County and Kids Creative Space will be on hand with interactive making and creating fun, too!

Business Fair will provide kids ages 6-17 the opportunity to be entrepreneurs -- boosting their confidence, teaching valuable lessons, and giving them an experience they will never forget. Youth will have the opportunity to connect both personally and professionally with other business owners, and sell their goods and services. There will be business coaching sessions and other educational opportunities available to youth as well leading up to the event!

Our event is sponsored by the City of Shawnee Parks and Recreation, Remake Learning Days, Acton Academy, the Acton School of Business, and the generous support of other donors and volunteers.  We all believe that principled entrepreneurs are heroes and role models for the next generation.

Our mission at Shawnee Parks and Recreation is “Create opportunities, for the Community, to Explore, Engage and Connect.”

In fulfilling our mission every day, we are working towards our vision long-term of who we want to be for Shawnee: “Shawnee Parks and Recreation is a leader in creating a healthy community that promotes innovative and inclusive opportunities that fulfill each person’s mind, body, and spirit.”

How do we do this? Through our two aquatic centers, Shawnee Civic Centre, twenty five parks with various amenities, a wide variety of events, classes, camps and workshops offered throughout the year, and our historical museum Shawnee Town 1929.

Frequently asked questions

What is Remake Learning Night + Business Fair?

Remake Learning Night + Business Fair is an opportunity for youth to connect both personally and professionally with other business owners, learn from one another, and create a marketplace where they can sell their goods and services.

How many businesses will you accept?

Up to 25 businesses.

How do I apply?

Application will be accessible on our City of Shawnee website and the Facebook event.

What is part of the application process?

Much like the rest of the event, there is an educational component to the application, where the youth, with parent/guardian guidance, answer questions about their idea, concept, budget, etc. such as....

  • What product or service do you plan to sell?

  • What price will you charge for each product/service? How much will each product/service cost you?

  • How will you pay for your startup costs? If someone is helping you with your startup costs, how will you pay that person back?

  • How will you advertise/market your business before the fair?

  • At the end of the fair, how will you determine if your business was a success?

What if someone else has the same business idea?

Two cupcake businesses? Not a problem. In general, we will let market forces play out, though we will let later entries know if another applicant has a similar idea so the later entrant can decide what to do.

How will the fair be set up?

The fair will be an indoor event with booths in our multipurpose space of the Civic Centre. Each business will be given a booth with a 6-foot table, and 1-2 chairs. Table cloths will not be provided. We will have fun, games, entertainment and more sponsored by our Community Wellness Hub as well!

Will electricity be available?

Yes, but limited.

What are the rules?

This event is designed to give children the experience of selling a product or service.

Parents/guardians of younger children may sit in the booth, but the children should be responsible for set up, customer interaction, and sales.

Parents/guardians may help their child fill out the application, but we expect the children to do as much as possible by themselves.

We expect that parents/guardians are only the "angel investors" financially, physically, helping and supporting the youth in their own business operations.

How is your event different than other Acton Business Fairs?

Our event actually was started before we found Acton! We are proud to embrace the principles and values of Acton though, and utilize the resources, website, information, and network of other events similar to it around the country. It's a perfect partnership to spread the vision of inspiring business-mindedness.

How did the Acton Children’s Business Fair get started?

Jeff and Laura Sandefer and a few other families wanted to spark a sense of wonder and entrepreneurship in their children so they created the first Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin, Texas, in 2007. That year, there were seven entrepreneurs and around 25 attendees. Now, there are over 115 entrepreneurs and 1,500 attendees at the Acton Children's Business Fair in Austin.
