Observe the opportunity for children to launch their very own startup business here at Bouldering Project in Tempe!

Kids develop a brand, create a product or service, build a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at our one-day marketplace.

We will host 36 booths at the Bouldering Project at 2626 S Hardy Dr. Tempe AZ 85282 on April 27th, 2024 fro 9am – 12 pm.

On top of the Vendor Market, we will have a “Best Vendor” Competition, raffles, prizes, discounted climbing passes, food trucks, face painting, and free tours/info meetings to learn more about Bouldering Projects Summer Camp!

This event is sponsored by Acton Academy, the Acton School of Business, and the generous support of our donors and volunteers.  We all believe that principled entrepreneurs are heroes and role models for the next generation. As well as hosted by Bouldering Project in Tempe.

Whether an entrepreneur is famous like Elon Musk or Oprah Winfrey or they are one of the thousands of unsung business owners across this country, these are the people who make sacrifices to innovate, create jobs and serve their communities.

Bouldering Project - Tempe opened in September 2023 and is so much more than just a climbing gym! Our spaces exist as community hubs that welcome people in and care for them. Through climbing, youth can learn so many life skills - resilience, problem-solving, camaraderie, calculated risk taking, and more.

We strive to create an atmosphere in which children feel empowered to embrace challenges and foster their creativity. We are so excited to host our first Kid’s Vendor Market with sponsorship from the Acton Children’s Business Fair. This event will take place outside of the gym on our spacious turf, and while they're here for the fair, guests are more than welcome to check out the facility for tours, learn about our youth programs, or even purchase specially discounted day passes for their family to climb!

Frequently asked questions

What is the Acton Children’s Business Fair?

The Acton Children’s Business Fair inspires children to discover their inner entrepreneur. The largest entrepreneurship event for kids in North America, this one-day market gives children the opportunity to showcase their very own businesses.

How many businesses will you accept?

We will accept up to 36 businesses.

Where should I begin?

Start with our resources page. Read inspiring stories about other young entrepreneurs and play games to hone your business skills.

How do I apply? Can I apply as part of a group?

Application must be submitted online. Please submit one application for each business. Children working as a group should submit one application that includes each child’s information. No more than 3 participants per business. In the case of a group winning the “Best Vendor” award, there will be only one prize given.

I have 2 children. Can they each have their own booth?

Yes,
Each child must submit an application, and we recommend they sell different items. If you would like your children’s booths side by side for supervision purposes, please email trinity.johnson@boulderingproject.com

What is on the application?

The application asks kids to think through some simple, but important elements of their business:

  • What product or service do you plan to sell?
  • What price will you charge for each product/service? How much will each product/service cost you?
  • How will you pay for your startup costs? If someone is helping you with your startup costs, how will you pay that person back?
  • How will you advertise/market your business before the fair?
  • At the end of the fair, how will you determine if your business was a success?

Is there a Vendor Fee?

Yes, the fee is 10$.

After your application is approved, you will be emailed a link and payment instructions from an “@boulderingproject.com” address.

The fee must be paid before the day of the Vendor Fair - 4/27.

What if someone else has the same business idea?

Two cupcake businesses? Not a problem. In general, we will let market forces play out, though we will let later entries know if another applicant has a similar idea so the later entrant can decide what to do.

How will the fair be set up?

The fair will be a shaded. Each business will be given an 8x10 space and 2 chairs. Table cloths will not be provided. We are not able to accommodate businesses requiring electricity.

If you are in need of a table please email trinity.johnson@boulderingproject.com. There is a very limited amount of tables available and will be given on a first-come basis.

Where can I get more information on the Venue?

Right Here!

Will electricity be available?

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide electricity to the booths.

What’s the Competition?

All our vendors will be entered into our “Best Vendor” Competition.
We will have a few of Bouldering Project’s Programs staff appointed as judges.
They will be walking around, asking the children questions about their business.
They will judge each booth on their presentation, level of preparedness, and creativity. They will be picking a 1st and 2nd prize winner announced at the last 30 minutes of the fair.
Any purchases made by the judges will not impact or give any advantage to the vendor who received said purchases.
Any booths/vendors who do not follow the below rules will be immediately disqualified.
A booth with multiple vendors/children working as a group is eligible to win. However, in the case a group wins, they will share the one prize.

What are the rules?

This event is designed to give children the experience of selling a product or service. If a parent is found selling or promoting a child’s product or service, their child’s business will be disqualified from the competition.

Parents of younger children may sit in the booth, but the children should be responsible for set up, customer interaction, and sales.

Parents may help their child fill out the application, but we expect the children to do as much as possible by themselves.

The  “vendor(s)” or child(ren) selling must be 7-14 years old.

What should I bring?

-A table that can fit in your 10x8ft space
-A cash box and change (if you are taking cash)
-The items you wish to sell
-Any decor or signage you wish to use

We are reminding our guests to bring cash, however we strongly recommend having Venmo, Cash app, and/or Zelle set-up with printed QR codes.

If you are in need of a table, please email trinity.johnson@boulderingproject.com
There is a limited amount of tables available and will be given on a first come basis.

How will my child receive payments?

We have no restrictions on how vendors/children ask for payment. We do recommend taking cash and having Venmo, CashApp, and/or Zelle set-up with printed QR Codes.

Card readers are permitted so long as the child(ren) can independently work the machines.

All payments must be taken by the child, so please practice this at home with your child(ren) before the fair. Do not bring payment methods your child can not use by themselves. Parents/guardians are not permitted to be in charge of taking payments but may assist as needed.

Ex.
Letting their child know when the Venmo/CashApp/Zelle has been received.
Helping their child count change if the child is having trouble or asking for help.
Troubleshooting any issues that arise with Venmo/CashApp/Zelle.
Troubleshooting issues with card readers.

How did the Acton Children’s Business Fair get started?

Jeff and Laura Sandefer and a few other families wanted to spark a sense of wonder and entrepreneurship in their children so they created the first Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin, Texas, in 2007. That year, there were seven entrepreneurs and around 25 attendees. Now, there are over 115 entrepreneurs and 1,500 attendees at the Acton Children's Business Fair in Austin.
