Frequently asked questions

This event is organized by the Acton Leadership Academy and will be held at 33227 Forest W St, Magnolia, TX 77354.

What is the Acton Children’s Business Fair?

The Acton Children’s Business Fair is a one-day market that gives children the opportunity to showcase their very own businesses. Children develop a brand, create a product or service, build a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at our one-day marketplace.

Who is eligible to participate?

Applicants must be between the ages of 6 and 18 as of November 1, 2023. Acton students, siblings, and friends are all eligible to participate.

What's in it for me?

We believe the Children’s Business Fair instills leadership, courage, perseverance, and responsibility into young hearts and minds. In addition to these invaluable skills, prizes will be awarded to the top business in each of the following categories:

  • Most Original
  • Highest Business Potential
  • Best Presentation

How do I apply? Can I apply as part of a group?

An application must be submitted online for each business. Children working as a group should submit one application that includes each child’s information (no more than 3 participants per business). The oldest child in the group will determine the age category used for judging.

Applications must be submitted by Friday, October 27th. Applications will be closed prior to this date if we reach capacity. We are unable to accommodate late applicants. Please see the list of other Acton Children's Business Fairs in our area if you miss the deadline.

What is on the application?

The application asks kids to think through some simple, but important, elements of their business:

  1. What product or service do you plan to sell?
  2. What price will you charge for each product/service? How much will each product/service cost you?
  3. How will you pay for your startup costs? If someone is helping you with your startup costs, how will you pay that person back?
  4. How will you advertise/market your business before the fair?
  5. At the end of the fair, how will you determine if your business was a success?

Does it cost money to participate?

A $10 booth fee is required to complete your Acton Children's Business Fair application ($10 is required for each business, not each child). You will be prompted during the online application process to submit your $10 fee.

What if someone else has the same business idea?

Two cupcake businesses? Not a problem. In general, we will let market forces play out. However, if an applicant’s business idea is similar to entries that were accepted before the applicant’s submission, we will notify the applicant and provide the opportunity to resubmit a new application.

How will the fair be set up?

The fair will be an outdoor event held under the pavilion on campus. Each business will be provided with one 6-foot banquet table.

What should I bring on the day of the fair?

  1. Business supplies
  2. A sign for your business
  3. Something to store your money
  4. Extra change in case your customers don’t pay in exact change
  5. Chair(s)
  6. Sunscreen and water
  7. Tablecloth and tape to secure it to the table
  8. One 6-foot banquet table will be provided for each business.

Will electricity be available?

Businesses requiring electricity will be carefully reviewed during the application process. Approval may or may not be granted depending upon available electrical outlets. No generators, please.

What are the rules?

This event is designed to give children the experience of selling a product or service. If a parent is found selling or promoting a child’s product or service, their child’s business will be disqualified from the competition.

Parents of younger children may sit in the booth, but the children should be responsible for set up, customer interaction, and sales.

Parents may help their child fill out the application, but we expect the children to do as much as possible by themselves.

How did the Acton Children’s Business Fair get started?

Jeff and Laura Sandefer and a few other families wanted to spark a sense of wonder and entrepreneurship in their children so they created the first Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin, Texas, in 2007. That year, there were seven entrepreneurs and around 25 attendees. Now, there are over 115 entrepreneurs and 1,500 attendees at the Acton Children's Business Fair in Austin.
