Frequently asked questions
The Acton Children’s Business Fair inspires children to discover their inner entrepreneur. The largest entrepreneurship event for children in North America, this one-day market gives children the opportunity to showcase their very own businesses.
How do I support The Hu(e)man Academy which is hosting the Acton Children's Business Fair?
- Once off financial pledges/sponsorships/donations are welcome.
- Becoming a member of The Hu(e)man Academy with a monthly subscription of $5 helps ensure that we bring curriculum to children that is relevant and effective.
- Do you have time to offer The Hu(e)man Academy? Are your skill sets or hobbies something that the academy needs to know about?
- Do you have a patio/garage/driveway that you can offer a child to use for the Acton Children's Business Fair specifically?
As many booths as there are porches, garages or driveways in the North Dakota Ridge Neighborhood.
Application must be submitted online. Please submit one application for each business. Children working as a group should submit one application that includes each child’s information. No more than 3 participants per business.
The application asks children to think through some simple, but important elements of their business:
- What product or service do you plan to sell?
- What price will you charge for each product/service? How much will each product/service cost you?
- How will you pay for your startup costs? If someone is helping you with your startup costs, how will you pay that person back?
- How will you advertise/market your business before the fair?
- At the end of the fair, how will you determine if your business was a success?
Two cupcake businesses? Not a problem. In general, we will let market forces play out, though we will let later entries know if another applicant has a similar idea so the later entrant can decide what to do.
Each booth will be set up in a private capacity on the porch, in the driveway or even the garage of the participant. Sometimes an online presence is appropriate. This is the easiest way to enable a seamless event with as much freedom as possible. So, please arrange for your own needs like electricity, refrigeration or otherwise. It may be useful to obtain a cottage food training if you so desire.
A map for the booths will be made available on the day to make it easy for customers to find your booth. Please offer your location if you want to be found!
Each booth is responsible for their business conduct which includes their terms and conditions of service. This is an invitational event, held on your private property and you are welcome to establish your own rules which the market forces will respond to.
We think the nature of the business will direct the method of exchange and can include cash, barter, IOU's, deposits or what ever creative idea the children come up with. This will support many facets of exchange. We're excited of offer children a sense of accomplishment in running a real business, offering value and making real money no matter their age. We suggest having a jar or box for payment at your booth. Credit cards and other electronic payment systems are discouraged because the children are not able to own these types of accounts and may be tricky for them to set this up independently. In rare circumstances, this may be appropriate.
This event is designed to give children the experience of selling a product or service. All adults are excluded from selling or promoting a child’s product or service.
But if adults can't help, how will we keep the children safe?
It almost goes without mentioning but to be clear, we understand that most adults wouldn't want their kids inventing and testing space travel for their booth without supervision nor wish to have their children handle dangerous equipment without a keen eye and technical support.
So of course, for exceptions that deems an adult necessary for safety or otherwise, adults may help their children. But please remember that this is a children's business fair, and the children lead the way.
Please, no competitive parents. Encouraging and supportive parents, yes!
How did the Acton Children’s Business Fair get started?
Jeff and Laura Sandefer and a few other families wanted to spark a sense of wonder and entrepreneurship in their children so they created the first Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin, Texas, in 2007. That year, there were seven entrepreneurs and around 25 attendees. Now, there are over 115 entrepreneurs and 1,500 attendees at the Acton Children's Business Fair in Austin.
