Frequently asked questions
The Acton Children’s Business Fair inspires children to discover their inner entrepreneur. The largest entrepreneurship event for kids in North America, this one-day market gives children the opportunity to showcase their very own businesses.
We will accept up to 36 businesses.
Start with our resources page. Read inspiring stories about other young entrepreneurs and play games to hone your business skills.
Who can apply?
Any child between the ages of 6 (or at least should be able to count money) to 14 year old. You must either live in Deaf Smith County or go to school in Deaf Smith County.
Application must be submitted online. Please submit one application for each business. Children working as a group should submit one application that includes each child’s information. No more than 3 participants per business.
The application asks kids to think through some simple, but important elements of their business:
- What product or service do you plan to sell?
- What price will you charge for each product/service? How much will each product/service cost you?
- How will you pay for your startup costs? If someone is helping you with your startup costs, how will you pay that person back?
- How will you advertise/market your business before the fair?
- At the end of the fair, how will you determine if your business was a success?
Two Christmas ornament businesses? Not a problem. In general, we will let market forces play out. Please make an effort to bring unique original crafted ideas with your own personal touch.
The fair will be an indoor event with tables. The fee for a booth is $10 which is turned in after the application has been accepted. Each business will be given an 8-foot table and 2 chairs. Table cloths will not be provided. It is the booth owners responsibility to provide everything need to make their booth marketable. We are not able to accommodate businesses requiring electricity.
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide electricity to the booths.
Who is responsible for petty cash?
Each booth must provide their own petty cash. Credit cards can not be accepted, even if the parent has a device. Part of the process is counting back change.
Who can come to the fair?
Invite everyone you know!
This event is designed to give children the experience of selling a product or service. Please let them have that experience. If a parent is found selling or promoting a child’s product or service, their child’s business will be disqualified from the competition.
If an applicant’s business idea is similar to entries that were accepted before the applicant’s submission, the CBF will notify the applicant and provide the opportunity to resubmit a new application.
Applicants must be between the ages of 6 - 14 on or before the APPLICATION OPEN date.
All entries will be automatically entered in the business competition, and booths will be judged on a variety of criteria, including most original business idea, highest business potential, and best presentation/creativity. (Judges will be invited and selected by each host.)
No more than 3 participants per booth/business idea.
Any parent seen selling to the customer or promoting the child’s product will result in
disqualification from the competition.
Jeff and Laura Sandefer and a few other families wanted to spark a sense of wonder and entrepreneurship in their children so they created the first Acton Children’s Business Fair in Austin, Texas, in 2007. That year, there were seven entrepreneurs and around 25 attendees. Now, there are over 115 entrepreneurs and 1,500 attendees at the Acton Children's Business Fair in Austin.
