About the fair
Observe the opportunity for children to launch their very own business!

Project XL Readiness Program, Inc. will be hosting its 1st annual Children’s Business Fair, Friday, July 10, 2020 from 6pm-8pm. Children develop a brand, create a product or service, build a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at our one-day marketplace.

This year, we will select 10 businesses for the fair. Applicants will participate in several challenges aimed to help them to prepare for the event. Guest judges will determine category winners and the 2020 Young Entrepreneur Award winner. The recipient of the Young Entrepreneur Award will receive $50.

This year’s fair is going to be spectacular! We have partnered with Main Street Fayetteville to host our Children’s Business Fair at the Luau at Friday Night Live! This huge event will take place at the Historic Courthouse Lawn. Young entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to sell their goods and services to thousands of people at one of Fayetteville’s largest events!

Whether an entrepreneur is famous like Elon Musk or Oprah Winfrey or they are one of the thousands of unsung business owners across this country, these are the people who make sacrifices to innovate, create jobs and serve their communities.

Frequently asked questions

What is Project XL?
Project XL Readiness Program, Inc. is an educational nonprofit located in Fayetteville, Georgia with a mission to help students eXceL academically so that they are able compete globally for future college and career opportunities. The organization holds an 8-week summer program that prepares students for their upcoming grade level, and a weekly after school program that exposes students to academic competitions. Students begin the program during the summer before they enter kindergarten. Signature programs and events are open to the public throughout the year.

Who can apply?
Registration is open to children ages 5-15. The fair is open to young entrepreneurs who plan to sell non-edible products, and services. Although we support the entrepreneurial dreams of all children, we are unable to host businesses who sell food items. Every registered business will be advertised on our social media page and in our 2020 Souvenir Booklet. Due to limited space at the Friday Night Live event, we will only be accepting 10 businesses.

How do I apply? Can I apply as part of a group?
Applications must be submitted online. Please submit one application for each business. There will only be one business name for each business. Children working as a group should submit one application that includes each child’s information. No more than 3 participants per business.

What is on the application?
The application asks kids to think through some simple, but important elements of their business:

  • What product or service do you plan to sell?
  • What price will you charge for each product/service? How much will each product/service cost you?
  • How will you pay for your startup costs? If someone is helping you with your startup costs, how will you pay that person back?
  • How will you advertise/market your business before the fair?
  • At the end of the fair, how will you determine if your business was a success?

What if someone else has the same business idea?
Two cupcake businesses? Not a problem. In general, we will let market forces play out, though we will let later entries know if another applicant has a similar idea so the later entrant can decide what to do.

How will the fair be set up?
The fair will take place outdoors at the Fayetteville Friday Night Live Luau. Each business will be given space for a table. Chairs, tents, decorations, and any other business necessities will be the sole responsibility of the participant.

Will electricity be available?
We will be able to provide electricity access to the booths. Extension cords, lights, and any other business necessities will be the sole responsibility of the participant.

What are the rules?
This event is designed to give children the experience of selling a product or service. If a parent is found selling or promoting a child’s product or service, their child’s business will be disqualified from the competition.

Parents of younger children may sit in the booth, but the children should be responsible for set up, customer interaction, and sales.

Parents may help their child fill out the application, but we expect the children to do as much as possible by themselves.
